These aren't your typical gift shops. They're thoughtfully curated boutiques — the kind of places where design, craftsmanship, and local makers meet. Here's your guide to Montana's best destinations for elevated shopping and one-of-a-kind finds.

Birdie Thatcher

Tucked into Missoula's SoHi neighborhood, this home goods and lifestyle shop stocks an array of objects that feel carefully hand-selected rather than ordered from a catalog: European brands you won't find elsewhere, vintage pieces mixed seamlessly among new arrivals, and seasonal finds that change often enough to reward return visits. Owner Kim has built a space that feels personal and warm, and the shop also houses a nail salon — a natural extension of its hospitality-first philosophy.

Modern Pastime

Modern Pastime opened inside Kalispell's historic Pastime Building in 2020, when Sean and Melissa Bonnet saw the potential for something thoughtful and well-edited in the heart of downtown. The shop moves easily between artisan cookbooks and cocktail kits, bath goods and candles, home décor and a clothing section tucked in the back — all curated with a point of view that feels current without chasing trends. Additional locations in Whitefish and Missoula have followed.

Heyday

Since opening on West Main Street in 2007, Heyday has become one of downtown Bozeman's most beloved destinations. Owned by Mallory, the shop’s inventory spans home goods, candles, jewelry, kitchen accessories, apparel, stationery, and a deep Montana-made collection. Heyday has also developed a loyal following beyond Bozeman through its online store, and its optional gift wrapping, complete with a personal note, has turned more than a few purchases into memorable gifts.

Hometana

Shirstie Gaylord started Hometana with a six-foot table at the Great Falls farmers market and a few hundred dollars worth of Montana-printed tees. Eight years later, that modest beginning has grown into a beloved downtown storefront, over 100 wholesale partners across the state, and a sister brand — Cowboy Slick — now wholesaling western gifts across the entire country. Gaylord's philosophy that the store belongs to Great Falls is evident in the mix: both tourists and lifelong locals find something here that feels made for them.

The General Mercantile

Founded in 1971 by Ray Domer, who built nearly every inch of the interior himself, from the barnyard wood paneling to the salvaged Broadwater Hotel beams at the counter and the 1930 hotel barstools that line the bar — the Merc has anchored its corner of Last Chance Gulch for over five decades. Today, owners Lindsey and Aaron carry the tradition forward. It is part coffee house, part candy emporium, part curiosity shop: a warren of niches stocked with gifts, cards, novelties, artisan chocolates, and things you genuinely cannot find anywhere else. The no-laptops policy is intentional — the Merc has always been a place for conversation and connection.

The Joy of Living

The Joy of Living opened in Billings in 2010 with a clear mission: stock the kinds of gifts that are as much fun to give as they are to receive. Owner Kris built the store around the French concept of joie de vivre, and the result is a carefully edited shop with a mix of jewelry, Montana-made goods, artisan cards, clothing, and seasonal finds. The store's complimentary gift-wrapping service has become something of a signature — The manager, Mariah, has been known to wrap purchases so beautifully they're ready to ship on the spot.
